Entrepreneurial Ideation in the Digital Era

0%
Entrepreneurial Ideation in the Digital Era

“It’s no longer the big beating the small,
but the fast beating the slow.”

Eric Pearson, CIO,
International Hotel Group

Entrepreneurial success today depends on the ability to:

  • react quickly to new opportunities
  • adapt to technological change
  • respond to shifting markets

Digitalization is the main driver of this shift:

  • Rapid technological progress - faster innovation and lower barriers to new products and services
  • Greater connectivity - access to global markets and instant communication
  • Wider availability of data - better understanding of markets and customer behavior
  • Greater organizational agility - faster experimentation and innovation
Why Digitalization Matters for Entrepreneurship

Digitalization is:

  • a key driver of future economic development
  • a major force shaping modern entrepreneurship

Digitalization influences entrepreneurship in two main ways:

  • It creates new entrepreneurial opportunities within the economy, as new technologies enable the development of innovative products, services, and digital business models.
  • It transforms the way businesses operate, including how entrepreneurial ideas are identified, developed, and implemented through digital tools, data, and new forms of interaction with customers.

This course explores how artificial intelligence can support entrepreneurial ideation in the digital era and is organized into two main modules that gradually move from understanding the broader context (Module 1) of digital entrepreneurship to actively generating digital entrepreneurial ideas (Module 2) using AI tools.

Digital Entrepreneurship in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Digital Entrepreneurship in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Digital technologies — including AI — are transforming how businesses are created, organized, and developed.

Entrepreneurs today operate in an environment shaped by:

  • data
  • digital platforms
  • connectivity
  • artificial intelligence

These technologies influence how entrepreneurial ideas are identified and how value is created.

Purpose of this module

  • introduce the concept of digital entrepreneurship
  • explain how digitalization influences entrepreneurial activities and business models
  • provide the conceptual foundation for understanding digital entrepreneurship

Structure of section 1: What is Digital Entrepreneurship?

  • digitalization
  • digital entrepreneurship
  • difference between digital vs. online entrepreneurship
What is digitalization?

Before understanding digital entrepreneurship, we must first understand digitalization.

“Digitalization is the implementation of digital technologies and the transformation of conventional processes into digital processes within organizations.” (Bouncken et al., 2021)

Digitalization is the broader process transforming how organizations:

  • operate
  • communicate
  • make decisions
  • interact with customers and markets

Examples of digital technologies:

  • Cloud computing – storing and accessing data via the internet
  • Mobile technologies – services through smartphones and mobile devices
  • Big data & analytics – analyzing large datasets for better decisions
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) – automation and predictive systems
  • Digital platforms – connecting different user groups
  • Internet of Things (IoT) – connected devices exchanging data

Digitalization not only transforms existing businesses but also creates new opportunities for entrepreneurship.

What is Digital Entrepreneurship?

Digitalization creates new opportunities for entrepreneurial activity by enabling new:

  • Products
  • Services
  • Business Models

As a result, many new ventures today are built directly on digital technologies.

Digital entrepreneurship refers to entrepreneurial activities where digital technologies play a central role in creating, delivering, and capturing value.

“Digital entrepreneurship is the creation of new ventures and the transformation of existing businesses through the development or new use of digital technologies.”(European Commission, 2018)

Digital entrepreneurship therefore includes new ventures built on digital technologies and also existing businesses transformed through digital solutions.

Digital vs. Online Entrepreneurship

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they describe different ways businesses use digital technologies.

Online Entrepreneurship Digital Entrepreneurship
  • Internet is mainly a channel for selling or communication
  • Business model often similar to traditional businesses
  • Transactions happen online
  • Digital technologies shape the entire business model
  • Business model is built around digital technologies
  • Value creation is digitally driven
  • Online courses
  • E-commerce / dropshipping
  • Content creation (YouTube, blogs, podcasts)
  • Freelancing services
  • Selling digital products
  • Digital platforms
  • Mobile applications
  • AI-driven services
  • Data-based business models
  • Digitally transformed companies

Hands-on exercises

🧪 Hands-on Exercise

  • Task: Use AI to generate practical examples of digitalization in traditional businesses.
  • Suggested prompt: “Give three examples of how a traditional business (e.g., a restaurant, retail store, or bank) can digitalize its processes using technologies such as cloud computing, data analytics, or AI.”
  • Follow-up question: Which example represents simple digitization and which represents deeper digitalization?

🧪 Hands-on Exercise¡

  • Task: Use AI to generate examples and evaluate whether they are truly digital or only online.
  • Suggested prompt: “Give five examples of online businesses and five examples of digital businesses.”
  • Follow-up question: Are all examples correctly classified? Which ones might belong to both categories?
Digitalization in Entrepreneurship

Digitalization does not influence businesses in the same way or to the same extent.

Companies and entrepreneurial ventures often adopt digital technologies gradually, moving from simple digital tools toward deeper transformation of their:

  • processes
  • business models
  • value creation systems

Understanding this process helps explain how digital technologies reshape entrepreneurial activity and create new opportunities for value creation.

Stages of Digitalization

The development of digital technologies in organizations can be illustrated through the Digital Transformation Pyramid.

Organizations typically progress through four stages of digital development:

1️⃣ Digitization
Conversion of analog information into digital form
(e.g., digital documents, databases)

2️⃣ Digitalization
Use of digital technologies to improve business processes

3️⃣ Digital Transformation
Redesign of business models and value creation using digital technologies

4️⃣ Digital Business Model
Full integration of digital technologies across the entire value chain

Digitalization and Business Models

Digitalization reshapes how companies design and operate their business models.

A business model describes how a company:

  • creates value
  • delivers value
  • captures value

These three functions are illustrated in the Business Model Canvas, which consists of nine key components.

Digitalization can influence each of these components.

Generating Digital Entrepreneurial Ideas Using AI

0%
Generating Digital Entrepreneurial Ideas Using AI

While Module 1 explained the concept of digital entrepreneurship, Module 2 focuses on entrepreneurial ideation.

Entrepreneurial ideation is the process of process of generating, developing, and refining potential entrepreneurial ideas.

Artificial intelligence can support this process by helping entrepreneurs to:

  • explore new perspectives
  • generate ideas quickly
  • identify opportunities

⚠️ However, AI should not replace human creativity and critical thinking.Instead, AI should be used as a tool that supports and enhances entrepreneurial thinking.

Foundations of Entrepreneurial Ideation

A strong digital entrepreneurial idea typically includes three key elements:

Entrepreneurs often generate ideas from sources such as:

  • personal experiences and everyday observations
  • technological developments and innovations
  • changes in consumer behavior and market trends
  • inefficiencies in existing products or services
  • new digital technologies and data availability

🧪 Hands-on Exercise

  • Task: Generate as many entrepreneurial ideas as possible in a short time.
  • Instructions: Set a timer for 5 minutes and write down as many entrepreneurial ideas as you can think of.
  • Follow-up question: How many ideas were you able to generate?

Many students find it difficult to generate many business ideas quickly.

One reason is that they try to think directly about business ideas, instead of first identifying problems that need solving.

💡 Successful entrepreneurs often start with problems, frustrations, or inefficiencies.

By focusing on problems, entrepreneurs can discover many more opportunities for innovation.

💡 Key principle:
Many successful entrepreneurial ideas begin with clearly identifying a problem before designing a solution.

Hands-on exercises

🧪 Hands-on Exercise

  • Task: Identify everyday problems that could become entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Instructions: Set a timer for 5 minutes and write down as many problems as you can observe in your daily life, studies, work, or environment. Do not use AI yet!
  • Follow-up question: Which of these problems could potentially be solved with a product, service, or digital solution?

🧪 Hands-on Exercise

  • Task: Transform problems into entrepreneurial ideas.
  • Instructions: Select three problems from the previous exercise and convert them into potential entrepreneurial ideas. Do not use AI yet!
  • Follow-up question: Which of the generated ideas seems the most promising and why?
Using Generative AI for Entrepreneurial Idea Development

Generative AI can significantly support entrepreneurial ideation.

AI tools can help entrepreneurs:

  • generate many ideas quickly
  • explore different perspectives
  • identify new opportunities
  • expand initial ideas into more developed concepts

💡 For this reason, learning how to interact effectively with AI tools is an important skill for entrepreneurs.

💡 AI should be used as a creative ideation partner, not as a replacement for human thinking!

🧪 Hands-on Exercise

  • Task: Use AI to generate as many entrepreneurial ideas as possible.
  • Instructions: Ask an AI tool to generate entrepreneurial ideas using any prompt that comes to your mind.
  • Follow-up question: How many ideas did the AI generate? Were the ideas specific or very general?

When interacting with AI, many users start with very simple prompts. While these prompts can generate ideas, the results are often broad or generic.

To obtain more relevant and useful ideas, it is important to provide context, such as:

  • the target customer group
  • the problem to be solved
  • the industry or domain

💡 Providing more context helps AI generate more specific and actionable entrepreneurial ideas.

🧪 Hands-on Exercise

  • Task: Use AI with a more detailed prompt to generate targeted entrepreneurial ideas.
  • Suggested prompt: “Generate 10 entrepreneurial ideas for [specific customer segment] that solve problems in [specific area or industry].”
  • Follow-up question: Did the ideas become more specific and relevant compared to the previous exercise?

Strong entrepreneurial ideas often emerge when three elements are combined:

💡 Ideas that align with these factors, they are more likely to be:

  • motivating
  • feasible
  • sustainable

🧪 Hands-on Exercise

  • Task: Use AI to generate entrepreneurial ideas based on your personal interests, skills, and knowledge.
  • Suggested prompt: “Based on my interests: [ ], skills: [ ], and knowledge: [ ], generate entrepreneurial ideas that solve problems in [specific area or industry].”
  • Follow-up question: Did the ideas become more specific and relevant compared to the previous exercise?
